Individuals CanadaCanoe -- KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - The ever-present perils of the Panjwaii claimed the life of another young Canadian soldier Thursday when his armoured vehicle struck a roadside bomb while returning from a mission to root out Taliban command centres and weapons caches.

Pte. Jonathan Couturier, 23, a member of 2nd Battalion, Royal 22e Regiment, based in Valcartier, Que., was killed when his vehicle detonated an improvised explosive device some 25 kilometres southwest of Kandahar city.

The tragedy makes Couturier the 131st Canadian soldier to die as part of the Afghan mission since it began in 2002. Eleven others who suffered minor injuries in the blast were treated at the Role 3 Hospital at Kandahar Airfield and have since returned to duty.

Individuals CanadaToronto Star -- Just five weeks ago, a stoic Maj. Yannick Pépin was bidding farewell to two of his fallen soldiers.

"The loss of these two is very difficult," he told reporters on Aug. 3, two days after the two men under his command were killed in a roadside ambush. "But the work will continue."

This weekend it was the major's turn to be eulogized.

Pépin, 36, and Cpl. Jean-François Drouin, 31, were killed Sunday when a roadside bomb smashed their armoured vehicle.

Individuals CanadaGlobe and Mail -- Two bombs detonated in succession – one to stop the convoy, the second designed to kill the troops after they emerged from their armoured vehicle – claimed the lives of two Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan on the weekend in a lethal refinement of the Taliban’s hallmark IED attack.

Corporal Christian Bobbitt, 23, and another soldier who cannot be identified because his family has asked for time to notify relatives, were on a refuelling mission near the town of Senjaray in the Zhari district west of Kandahar city on Saturday when their vehicle was hit by an IED explosion at around 3:20 p.m. Kandahar time, the Canadian Forces said.

Individuals CanadaGlobe and Mail -- A helicopter crash possibly caused by mechanical failure claimed the lives of two Canadian soldiers on Monday, bringing Canada's death toll from the Afghanistan mission to four in as many days.

The crash of the Griffon helicopter at an American forward operating base in Zabul province, about 80 kilometres northeast of Kandahar city, killed Master Corporal Pat Audet and Corporal Martin Joannette along with a coalition soldier from another country. Three other Canadians were hurt; two were able to return to duty, while the third was in stable condition. Sources said the two pilots survived.

“It has been an extremely difficult week here in Kandahar,” Canadian commander Brigadier-General Jonathan Vance said early Tuesday.
