Dayton Daily News -- The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks inspired Randy M. Haney to try to make a difference in the world.

He joined the Army in 2002, the same year he married his high school sweetheart.

The 27-year-old staff sergeant was killed Sunday, Sept. 6, in eastern Afghanistan when his convoy came under attack in the Nangarhar province.

He was on his third tour of duty in the Middle East. He served previously in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“He just gave all,” his mother, Amanda Macy of Troy, said Wednesday. “He gave everything for everybody.”

Funeral arrangements are still pending at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home in Piqua.

Haney and his wife, Katie, who were high school sweethearts in Orlando, Fla., have two children, Aubry, 5, and Austin, 1.

He was a military police officer with the 2nd Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division out of Fort Carson, Colo.
